Nelson, Carole and Marlyn performing the "candle dance" (a rural dance) in rural costumes at the Filipino American Association of North Puget Sound's Grand Ball at Naval Station Everett. Rural costumes of the Christian Filipinos show the Spanish influence. The skirts often have aprons and small shoulder scarves. The blouses are usually short and sheer with stiff, puffed short sleeves and a white cotton camisole is generally worn under them. The native shoes for men and women are scuffs for slippers made of either abaca (banana fiber) or of wood.
Mestiza-Carole takes center stage with the Maria Clara/cotillion Spanish influenced costume that was named after the poet and hero of Philippines Jose Rizal. Carole features a floor-length paneled skirt of silk in stripes of contrasting colors.
Maria Clara History
Maria Clara, the name of the mestiza heroine of martyr Dr. Jose Rizal's 1890 novel, Noli Me Tangere, is the eponym for the resplendent Filipino costume in vogue at the turn of the century. The appellation is apropós for the ensemble, like the heroine, is delicate and feminine but clearly self-assured in terms of its projected sense of identity. It is, in fact, the only national costume that carries a literary name, and for this reason calls the attention to the apparel's subtle nationalist aesthitics.
