In April of 1989, he reported for duty aboard the USS RANGER (CV-61) where he served as the Carrier Intelligence Center Photo Lab Leading Petty Officer and special imagery technician. In September of 1990, he was advanced to the rank of Chief Petty Officer. In November 1990, the USS RANGER was deployed to the Arabian Gulf in Support of OPERATION DESERT STORM. The USS RANGER photo lab was credited with processing more than 600,000 feet of tactical imagery and was lauded by Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Colin Powell, for providing the best in-theater imagery of OPERATION DESERT STORM. He earned both EAWS and ESWS warfare qualifications and completed three Western Pacific, Arabian Gulf deployments before the ship was decommissioned in 1993.
In April of 1993, he reported to Fleet Imaging Center Pacific as the Production Control Leading Chief Petty Officer. He was a driving force in converting the facility from traditional to digital photography. In 1994 he became the center’s Assistant Officer In Charge and was advanced to Senior Chief Petty Officer in April of 1996. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree during this tour.
Senior Chief Lewis reported for duty onboard the USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN in July 1996 as the Photo Lab Leading Chief Petty Officer. He was also assigned as the Cruise Book Editor, Operation’s Department Maintenance Coordinator and the Senior Enlisted, Watch Coordinator where he was responsible for assigning in-port watches for more than 2,000 Sailors. Senior Chief Lewis was instrumental in converting the photo lab from traditional to digital photography. Senior Chief Lewis also served as the Photo Lab Division Officer for 8 months. He completed a Western Pacific/Arabian Gulf deployment. In May of 2000, he reported to Naval Submarine Base Bangor/Naval Base Kitsap. He transfered to the fleet reserve in February 2006.
Senior Chief Lewis has been awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (2 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (2 awards), Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation (two awards), Navy Unit Commendation, Joint Meritorious Unit Commendation, Battle “E” Ribbon, Joint Service Commendation, Good Conduct Medal (6 awards), Navy Expeditionary Medal, Southwest Asian Service Medal (3 awards), Kuwait Liberation Medal (Saudi), Kuwait Liberation Medal (Kuwait), Global War on Terrorism Medal, National Defense Service Medal (2 awards), Military Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (6 awards) and numerous Presidential, Flag Rank, Gubernatorial, Senatorial letters of commendation.
Senior Chief Lewis is the son of Senior Chief Cryptologic Technician (ret) Graydon Lewis and Mrs. Alice Lewis of Eugene, Oregon. Senior Chief Lewis is married to the former Carolina Carrillo of Manila, Republic of the Philippines. She is a federal service worker and "star" dancer for the cultural dance group Filipinas Performing Arts of Washington State (FPAWS). Their son’s name is Jeremy. Jeremy is is a senior at Washington State University. Senior Chief Lewis graduated from North Eugene High School, Eugene Oregon in 1979. He graduated from Chapman University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Science in 1995 and Master's Degree in Special Education in 2007. He was the President of the Filipino American Association of North Puget Sound (FAANPS). He is currently a civil service employee, commercial photographer, and professional writer. His latest piece will be published in the Oregon Coast Magazine in November, 2008. He will graduate from the University of Phoenix with a second Master's Degree in February, 2009
